The first Avalon was built on a stretched FF Camry platform with a V6 3.0L engine producing 192HP which also shared with the 1994 Toyota Camry. In 1997 the Avalon included anti-block ABS standard brakes and upgraded the engine to 200HP increasing the torque to 214 lb-ft. The following year it received some minor exterior changes and side airbags were added along with other safety features.

The second generation Avalon was exclusively manufactured in the United States for Canada and the North American auto market with a few being exported to Japan, marketed as the Toyota Pronard.
