The Toyota Tacoma has been manufactured in Fremont, California by Toyota Motors since 1995, being slightly smaller than its big brother the Toyota Tundra, the Tacoma which was named after Tacoma, Washington falls under the compact pick-up truck category. The Tacoma replaces the popular Toyota Hilux pick-up which was officially discontinued in Canada, however it is still very popular in South America and Asian markets. The Toyota Tacoma was named Truck of the Year by Motor Trend Magazine in 2005.

Toyota Tacoma 1995-2004
The first Toyota Tacoma was introduced to the Canadian market as a compact pick-up truck, combining safety, comfort and handling. The Tacoma was equipped with three optional engines; 2.4L 4-cylinder engine with 142HP, 2.7L 4-cylinder engine with 150HP which it shares with the Toyota 4Runner and a V6 3.4L engine with 190HP and 220 lb-ft of torque which it shares with the Tundra. The Tacoma is available in two-wheel drive (2WD) and four-wheel drive (4WD) coupled with a 4-speed automatic or 5-speed manual transmission.

From 1995 to 2000 the Toyota Tacoma pick-up trucks were only available in single cabs (regular cab) and extra cab or Xtra cab in 2001 Toyota added a Tacoma crew cab to the line up, the four door crew cab version quickly became very popular for commercial and personal vehicles. Tacoma competed directly with the Nissan Frontier, Dodge Dakota and Ford Ranger.

When you combine all those options there are four 2011 Tacoma models to choose from; 2011 Tacoma access cab 4x2; Tacoma access cab 4x4; 2011 Tacoma V6 access cab 4x4; and the fully loaded 2011 Toyota Tacoma V6 double cab 2011 Tacoma access cab 4x4.

The Toyota Tacoma 4x4 engines include ETCS-i (electronic throttle control system with intelligence) for the 4x4 models which uses the optimal amount of throttle increasing both response and fuel efficiency. The V6 engine which it shares with the 4Runner and Tundra is equipped with a 6-speed manual or 5-speed automatic transmission; while the 4-cylinder 2.7L engine uses a 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic transmission, both automatic transmissions include electronically controlled transmission (ECT).
