The car will be available in two trims when it goes on sale this spring in Canada: The GT Limited and GT Elite. A 3.3-litre twin-turbo V6 engine capable of producing 368 horsepower — and paired with all-wheel drive — is standard on both. That output is up just touch from the 360-hp engine of the outgoing models.
That allows it to compete with the German brands that Kia considers rivals. Unlike corporate sibling Hyundai, Kia does not have a luxury brand. The Stinger, however, shares a rear-drive platform with the Genesis G70 sedan.
“The Stinger confidently shows Kia’s ability to build a sport sedan that can compete — and beat — the best the world has to offer,” said Sean Yoon, CEO of Kia Motors North America, said in a statement Tuesday. “It is definitive proof of our proud and evolving engineering prowess.”
The Stinger is still suffering from the ongoing decline in the car market, with Canadian sales down 28.3 per cent to 1,125 in 2020. The ongoing pandemic and associated lockdowns and stay-at-home orders contributed to lost sales across the board last year.
Meanwhile, U.S. sales fell 9.4 per cent to 12,556 in 2020. But Stinger deliveries were just shy of the Acura ILX and Lexus IS in the compact-luxury segment. The Stinger placed 10th in the segment in Canada, about 700 units behind the Lexus IS.
‘The Stinger’s styling updates include Kia’s new script-like logo, standard LED headlamps, a horizontal taillight that runs across the hatch, new geometric-pattern wheels and more aggressive exhaust tips.
Inside, there are new black-gloss and chrome details on the instrument panel, LED lighting with a vibrant colour palette and special stitching on the higher-level GT trims.
The trims also get a new electronic variable exhaust system that enhances the sound of the 3.3-litre turbo motor.
The interior has an upgraded new cluster housing, frameless rear-view mirror and a 10.25-inch navigation screen.
There also are expanded safety features for avoiding accidents and driver-assistance functions for the highway.
The Elite package comes standard with heads-up display and premium Nappa leather seats. It also has available suede interior and red stitching and seat belts. It also comes with blind-spot monitoring.
the GT Limited starts at $52,345 while the GT Elite begins at $54,845. Both prices include shipping.
